Farmgirl Friday Blog Hop #97

Happy Farmgirl Friday!

This week has been a wild one.  Snowstorms, swap meet finds, remodeling progress, and the search for the "perfect" grout color for the new kitchen countertops.  So many adventures this week on the homefront.  I hope you have had a GREAT week and are ready to stroll through this hop to check in on all our farmgal and guy pals to see what they've been up to.

Deb shares her picks for FEATURED FARMGIRL of the week HERE!  My picks this week are all chicken related as I plan to add a few more chicks to the coop this spring...decisions, decisions.

First, Amy of Heritage Homemaker at Eason Acres linked up a wonderful resource she found online called the Henderson's Chicken Breed Chart.  It can be found HERE and on her blog post HERE.  I have bookmarked the page for reference.  What a great quick reference!  Thanks Amy.  Please stop by her blog and explore a bit, if you haven't yet.

Amy has many helpful tutorials and ideas like her amazing homemade incubator which she linked up too this week.  That little bit of ingenuity blew me away!  Girl Power! On behalf of chicken Mamas everywhere let me just say that it feels good to be among fellow poultry lovers.

Then, my heart was taken aback by the cutest little fluffy tush salmon faverolle.  I must confess, I have a few and I love them.  They're such characters.  So chatty and friendly.  One of mine acts as coop sentry.  Every time I enter the coop she sounds the alarm to alert my rooster to come and get me.

When I finally settled down, I finished reading the article Mites- Natural Prevention and Treatment for Your Chickens written by another dear friend in poultry, Lisa- over at the blog Fresh Eggs Daily. Lisa and the gals of FED write some of the most helpful and informative posts out there about raising poultry.  I have been following them for a while and am grateful for their expertise.

I spent years in college to become the gal that prescribes chemicals to farmers to eradicate pests on food crops, and this training makes me loathe to use ANY commercial chemicals, organic or conventional.  I am always on the look out to try natural remedies and cultural controls that can replace commercial offerings and help my farm become harsh chemical free.

Thanks Lisa for providing me with one such fun example.  I look forward to the days getting dry and warmer here soon.  I will test the coop spray and the garlic chicken spray then and report back my results.

  1. Thanks for the feature Heidi! I always reach for the natural remedy or preventative first - especially since its usually easier AND cheaper than going with chemicals as well as safer. I am excited you're going to try some of my concoctions - please let me know what you think!
