This week I made my first few batches of goat milk soap.
I started with (Beekman Boys) Dr. Brent Ridge's basic unscented goat milk soap recipe which I found on Martha Stewart's website HERE. I added a few herbs, raw honey from my bees, vitamin E, and ground oats into the dark bars for me. Then I ran it through a soap calculator online just to be sure my ratios were good, and Voila! We have soap. The light colored bars contain a few drops of peppermint oil in them for my hubby.
The soap still has to cure for a few weeks to be sure the lye has cooked out, but I used to make cold process soap often- and this soap was so mild after initial processing that I was amazed.
We have soap for a year in under two hours.
Your soap is lovely! I have a goat, her job will be to produce milk for soap. I started amking soap this year and it is addictive! Must try peppermint now!
ReplyDeleteI make soap. Cold process too. I have so much soap that it will be years before I will be out. I make DIY laundry soap from some and give lots away for gifts. Occasionally I sell a bar or two but find that many people in my area don't want to pay $3.50 a bar for soap. I feel that is a reasonable price and some will go on line to purchase more expensive soap feeling if it cost more, it is better. My soap is high quality, using only the finest milk and oils I can purchase. I love it that your goat is such a provider and enjoy making your soaps. It is a skill that many don't understand or appreciate. I do!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try it. Looking forward to our weekend together. You can show me all your secrets. I have already learned so much from you.
ReplyDeleteHeidi,
ReplyDeleteYour soap is beautiful! You did it! I hope to make some one day. I know it is a good soap.
It looks wonderful! Almost good enough to eat.
ReplyDeleteWow that's impressive! I've only made soap once, it was made from olive oil. It's useable but not really the best as far as soap goes. You've inspired me to try my hand at soapmaking once again! If only we had a goat or two around to donate some milk!
ReplyDeleteI love to make soap and that soap is gorgeous!!
